Two tiny beaks

This afternoon I was able to peek in the nest while the hummingbird was off. The babies are so tiny but I could make out two little heads and beaks with some fluff as they moved in the nest. I also noticed a lot of weeds around that rose bush that I'll be pulling sometime next month.

Southeast corner

So far the lantana that I transplanted and two new groundcover rose bushes are doing pretty well in the southeast corner. I had expected the lantana to grow faster as they did in their previous spot. Perhaps they need more time to recover from the shock of the move. The new plumbago seems to need more water than the established plant. I hate to use more water but hopefully once established it will be like the other. I also added a scarlet mandevilla vine that I hope will grow up the shade structure for color and greenery.

Two babies

The hummingbird was off her nest this afternoon so I took a look. There are now two tiny baby birds in the nest. I hope they do as well as the birds last year. I tried to get a photo but didn't want to disturb them.

Saturday

The patio this morning--ready for company.

Got a peek in the nest and saw one egg and one tiny baby bird. Perhaps the second will hatch on Sunday.

One baby bird

The mother bird was off the nest late this afternoon so Mr. W went over to take a peek. One of the hummingbird eggs has hatched! The baby bird is so tiny and dark. Now we wonder when the second egg will hatch.

It will be at least another month before I weed the rose garden and deadhead some of the bushes. I don't want to do anything that will disturb the hummingbirds. We enjoyed watching them last spring and it's great to have the birds return this year.

Corner

I've been working on the southeast corner this season and last trying to determine what will grow there. The two lantana I moved earlier this spring have leafed out and had a few blossoms so they might do well here. A lavender died and another seems to be handling the heat well. Today Mr. W helped me plant two ground-cover roses and another plumbago. He dug the holes and found at least one football sized rock. I am hoping the roses will spread their full 3 feet and fill in the bare spots. The plumbago replaces one that died in a previous season. A second plumbago has always done well on the south fence so I'll give another one a try next to it. I'd like to take some of the vines off the south fence but thought it might disturb our little buzzer bird. I may wait for the babies to hatch and fly.

Nesting

Our little humming bird has two eggs in her nest and spends much time on them. We can see her if we peek out the sliding door as shown in the picture. I took it standing near the sliding door and using the telephoto lens. The nest seems to be in a pretty good spot as it is farther from the patio than last year's nest. It is closer to the trash cans and air conditioner. I moved the trash cans as far away as possible when the nest was under construction. I notice she will stay there if I open the trash can and the recycler but not the green waste can. It must be too close for her comfort. We were curious to see if the noise from the air conditioner running would bother her. Today is the first day we have had the A/C on and she is sitting on the nest as I write.
